Letters of a novice
of Guido Piovene
(Bompiani)
Born in Vicenza in 1907, Guido Piovene began long young career in journalism, becoming, along with Buzzati, Orio Vergani and Montanelli, one of the most well-known signatures of the twentieth century Corriere della Sera.
author of significant works such as De America and Travel in Italy , examples of what we today call travel narrative, he devoted himself, around the '30s, to a slightly inquisitive literature, portraying the darker aspects Vicenza and ambiguous of the bourgeoisie, dominated by prejudice and hypocrisy caused by the strong influence of religious and moral doctrine of the Fascist. An ambiguity that will not spare even the writer himself: big friend of Eugenio Colorni , the noted philosopher Leibniz jew Milanese scholar and Benedetto Croce, Piovene lose this unique friendship for positively reviewed the text of the anti-Semitic journalist Telesio Hinton, a supporter of fascism and racial laws.
In spite of this reprehensible behavior, not only among the intellectuals of the time, the writings of Guido Piovene are distinguished mainly by the strong psychological introspection made in the treatment of the characters and for the analysis of a society devoid of values.
admirable example, a novice Letters was published in 1941 with great success and considerable criticism from the Catholic world, famous for the film adaptation of Alberto Lattuada .
The novel, written in epistolary form depending on the model of six to seven hundred, is the story of the novice Practice Rita, who writes to her confessor and later the first secretary of the bishop, asking for help to escape from the convent. Lazy and indolent in nature, back from a morbid affection with his mother and a romantic getaway ended with the accidental death of his companion, Rita, closed the convent to avoid the scandal, living with lies and flattery, is surrounded by people who Like you, avoiding to face the truth and do not remedy the mistakes but, selfish to the last, on the contrary tried to suppress, would go so far to commit a murder for which will be deemed insane by the courts, and died of pneumonia: I hope God understands me, will be his last words.
As the author himself says in the introduction of this indolence deal themselves, this absolute inability, perhaps intended, to know intimately, this selfishness with no way out, are the first steps towards a bad faith inevitably leads to committing the cruelest actions generated from the desire to reveal only in relation to their convenience. Evil, moreover, is latent in all of us.
The stage version of the novel by Guido Piovene held from CRT Milan Show (0289011644) until 14 December , the result of the meeting between the eclectic playwright Luca Scarlini and a beautiful actress Maria Grazia Mandruzzato , is made around the figure of the mother of Margaret that the narrator of the play traces the life of his daughter until his death in prison as a possible "showdown". In the background, the Veneto, a land of Piovene, it conjured in his melancholy landscapes of mist and green, and music by Gian Francesco Malipiero , linked in turn to this strange land.
